My Story
I was born and grew up in a lower middle class family in the suburbs of Salt Lake City. I attended public school K-12 in SLC. My first jobs were mowing lawns and shoveling driveways in my neighborhood. Later, when I could drive, I worked full time as a machinest after school and on weekends during my highschool and college years . After highschool, I attended Uof U for one quarter and USU for 4 years, my major was pre-dental. During college, I worked as a short order cook. During the summers, I worked as a machinest and later a sprinkler installer . While at USU, I joined the Utah National Guard and Army ROTC. I was active in the Utah National Guard for 2 years and then Inactive Ready Reserve for 4 years and received an Honorable Discharge. I graduated form USU with a BS in the Biology and minors in Military Sceince, Chemistry and Genetics. I attented Dental school at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln Dental School. I married right before leaving for Dental school and while persuing my degree we had my oldest daughter Elyse and oldest son Dallin. While in Dental school I worked as a pizza delivery boy for 4 years and owned my own business names “BKT Sprinkler Lawn & Yard Care”. My employee shortened the name of the business and my name to just “BK”. This has been my nickname with my friends from the Dental school era. “Sprink” was another nickname in Dental school associated with my sprinkler installation and repair business.
After graduation I moved my growing family to Cedar City and started my Dental practice from scratch. While building a practice, we had 2 more sons, Tanner and Mckay. I was divorced about a year and a half after Mckay was born and have tried to be the best father I could be. Over the years that my four oldest kids played city rec sports, I’ve coached 60+ teams of various sports events for the teams that my kids play on. All the years I’ve been in Cedar City, I have played city league softball and some basketball. Within the last 8 years, I’ve gotten into bicycle races, mainly road races that are around 200 miles. Within the last year and a half , I’ve gotten into ultra marathons, which are runner events further then 26 miles. The distances that I have run in one day are: one 31 miles(50k) snowshoe and three 50 mile trail races. My youngest son, Hunter, was born May of 2008 and I’m getting geared up and excited to coach the sports he decides to play in city rec.
The older I get, the more political I become, the more opinions I have and the stronger those opinions become. I can’t stand what is going on in Washington and decided that I couldn’t do anything about Washington issues but I could do something good in Cedar City. I am getting involved and putting my hat in the ring for City Council race with the belief that I have the traits that include : passion, knowledge, teachability, conviction, honesty and experience. These attributes will help me make hard and important decisions for both the residents of Cedar City and Cedar City. My views are based on what I call “Common Sense”. Lets get closer to what our “Founding Fathers” intentions were, NOT further away from their intentions!
I know the United States of America is the greatest country ever on the face of this earth. It is not perfect however, it is MY chosen land! Cedar City is the greatest city in Utah and it is not perfect. My goal is to get elected by the Common vote of Cedar City and make this an even better place to live. With your support and vote, we can do this.
Thanks!
